N.E.G.S. has given a grant of £200 to assist Lynda Yorke in her PhD. research. An outline of her research project is given below. We look forward to her giving N.E.G.S. a presentation on Nov. 16th 2007

The Tyne Valley lies within the limits of the last glacial advance of the Late Devensian (delta18 Stage 2), and was affected by ice streams from both the Lake District and south-west Scotland, and from the Southern uplands. As a result the valley was infilled with both glacial and deglacial sediments, forming a sequence of sediment-landform assemblages.  The landforms are particularly prominent along the length of the Tyne Valley between its lower and mid valley reaches.  The assemblages that crop out above the Holocene valley floor vary both spatially and sedimentologically.  The lower valley is dominated by complexes of undulating landforms mostly underlain by sands whereas the mid valley is characterised by terraces up to 20 m above present river level underlain by gravels.
The aims of the PhD were to: clarify the genesis of the deposits; to elucidate the deglacial and early post-glacial history of the region; and to develop a geochronological framework that would allow the Tyne Valley to be compared with other available models of deglaciation in the UK.  The methodology involved detailed field survey and geomorphological mapping, DEM visualizations, an exposure-recording programme, spatial modelling and sediment budgeting, and a programme of optical luminescence dating.
